Andrzej Czeczot (1933-2012) – eminent Polish graphic artist, satirical cartoonist and animated film creator. He was born on October 27, 1933 in Krakow, graduated from the Academy of Fine Arts in Krakow (Faculty of Graphics in Katowice) in 1957.

He debuted in 1956 in the cult weekly "Szpilki", with which he was associated for many years. He quickly became one of the most important Polish satirical cartoonists, and his distinctive, "bulbous" line and black humor inspired entire generations of artists, including Andrzej Mleczko.

He was the author of drawings published in many titles, incl. in "Polityka", "Literatura", "Ty i Ja", as well as abroad, such as "The New Yorker" or "The New York Times". He illustrated about 200 books and designed over 450 covers.

His work had a political dimension – in 1976 he was sentenced to six months in prison suspended for the drawing "Ryszard IV", criticizing the actor Ryszard Filipski. During martial law he was interned, and in 1982 he emigrated to the USA, where he lived and worked until 1997.

After returning to Poland, he made the feature-length animated film "Eden" (2002), for which he received an award in Gdynia. He was a three-time winner of the Golden Szpilka (1970, 1971, 1973) and was awarded the Gold Medal "Meritorious to Culture Gloria Artis" (2008).

He died on May 9, 2012 in Warsaw after a serious illness.
