Figurine of a woman in traditional costume Japan 19th-20th century.
Figurine of a woman made of bone, in traditional costume, originating from Japan, dated between the 19th and 20th centuries, measures approx. 39.5 cm in height, and 10 cm in width, made of porcelain. The figurine depicts a young woman, dressed in traditional Japanese attire, standing on a pedestal. In her right hand she holds a two-panel fan, with a dragon motif, associated with strength, divine wisdom, and above all protection from misfortune. On the opposite side, she holds a chrysanthemum flower, which emphasizes the connection with nature and the season, in this case autumn. She is dressed in a traditional Japanese outfit, the long sleeves suggest a Furisode garment, worn by young and unmarried women. Among the decorative elements, the kimono has an Obi belt, often the most expensive and most decorative element. In Japanese tradition, it is tied with a bi-jime cord and an obi-age decorative fabric. The Furisode has rich ornamentation with a chrysanthemum motif, whose petals cover the hem of the sleeves, and also appear in full. Additionally, a wave motif is visible, and on the back there is Kikkō (Tortoiseshell pattern), a symbol of longevity, happiness, and protection. Often used as a background (jimon) for other, more important motifs (e.g., flowers, birds). The hair is styled in a bun, tied with a "Kanzashi"-type headband, formalizes the entire outfit, and is a flagship example of this type of ornament, in this case a bird motif has been used, with ridges surrounding the head of the figure.
