Icon of the Mother of God Life-Giving Spring - Tempera on panel, Russia 19th c.
We present a unique Orthodox icon of the Mother of God "Life-Giving Spring" (Russian: Живоносный Источник), painted in the traditional tempera technique on a panel. It most likely originates from Russia from the 19th century and is an excellent example of Russian sacred art with deep symbolism.
Composition and symbolism
The central motif of the icon is the Mother of God with the Child Jesus (the Savior), depicted inside a large chalice (cup). This chalice symbolizes the source of all grace and the Eucharist. The cup is placed in a stone baptismal font or basin, from which water of healing properties flows – directly referencing the miracle at the Balikli shrine near Constantinople. In the lower part of the icon, figures are visible – dignitaries, the sick, and the faithful drawing water from the source, symbolizing spiritual and physical healing. Above the Mother of God, two angels hover, and on the side panels (kleimas) there may be images of selected saints who served as patrons for the family commissioning the icon.Condition and collector's value
The icon is preserved in good condition for its age, with visible traces of patina and natural aging of the panel and pigments. It is an authentic artifact of Russian church art, which will adorn any antique collection, as well as a valuable interior design element with spiritual and historical significance.Ideal for:
- collectors of icons and sacred art,
- people seeking unique objects with deep Christian symbolism,
- lovers of Russian culture and Orthodox tradition,
- investors in antiques with growing market value.
