Orthodox Icon "Seven Sleepers" (Susalka) - 19th century, Russia, painted on gold

You are presented with a unique and extremely rare Orthodox icon from 19th-century Russia, depicting a rarely seen iconographic image of the "Seven Sleepers of Ephesus" (also known as the "Seven Sleepers" or "Susalka"). The icon stands out not only for its subject matter but also for its exceptionally rich, noble technique of execution.

The central part of the composition is occupied by the image of seven holy youths, asleep in a cave. The scene refers to the ancient Christian legend of the youths of Ephesus, who, persecuted for their faith, fell into a miraculous sleep lasting several centuries, only to awaken in the times of Christianity's triumph. This depiction, known in folk tradition as "Susalka", was particularly valued as a symbol of protection, hope, and resurrection.

The icon was painted using tempera technique on primed wood, and the background and halos of the saints are covered with genuine gold leaf (later). The gilding, despite the passage of time, gives the composition an otherworldly glow and depth, emphasizing the sacred character of the image. The color palette is subdued, with shades of ochre, umber, and blue characteristic of Russian icon painting. Traces of age patina are visible, adding authenticity to the object and highlighting its over 150-year-old history.

This item has enormous collector and museum value. It is not only a beautiful example of sacred art but also a unique testimony of faith and tradition. It will make a wonderful addition to an icon collection, a religious art collection, or as an exceptional interior decoration with a sacral character.
