Brass Masonic Belt of IOOF Patriarchs Militant - England turn of the 19th/20th c.
Presented to you is an extremely rare and fascinating collector's item of deep symbolism – an antique belt buckle (or medal) belonging to the elite degree of Patriarchs Militant within the Independent Order of Odd Fellows (IOOF). This unique piece dates from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries and is an excellent testament to the history of fraternal organizations.
The central part of the brass shield features an expressive scene with a lion and a lamb, flanked by the Latin motto „PAX AUT BELLUM” („Peace or War”). This motif perfectly captures the spirit and purpose of the Patriarchs Militant degree, which often combined Christian ideals with military discipline and readiness to defend. Above the composition towers the all-seeing Eye of Providence – a universal symbol of divine care, also present in Masonic iconography.
This item is much more than just an accessory. It is a material trace of the activity of one of the largest and most influential fraternal charitable societies in the world. IOOF, founded in England, emphasized friendship, love, and truth, and its higher degrees, such as Patriarchs Militant, were reserved for the most committed members.
Why is this item unique?
- Rarity: Items associated with the higher degrees of IOOF, especially in such good condition, appear on the collector market extremely rarely.
- Rich symbolism: It is an excellent example of the art and iconography of fraternal societies from the Victorian/Edwardian era.
- Historical value: It is an authentic artifact from the „golden age” of fraternal organizations.
- State of preservation: The item presents itself excellently, with clear details and a patina of age.
