Percussion pistol, France 19th century

French percussion pistol from the 19th century, probably a dueling pistol about 24 cm long. Its role may be indicated by the engraving on the percussion cap, which was not common for service weapons. This particular model is likely the Gendarmerie Mle 1842, which was the most popular pistol of that period. Often converted for private use, as can be seen in this case. Characteristic for this model is the barrel with a powder chamber, attached to the stock by a screw in the "tail" of the barrel and a barrel band. The barrel band has a long lower extension reaching down to the trigger guard and a hole for the ramrod. The percussion lock is located at the back; the stock is probably made of walnut or Italian walnut. Factory steel fittings. Introduced during the July Monarchy. Production lasted at least from 1845 to 1858, and some sources suggest even longer. It was used for about 30-40 years, until replaced by revolvers in the 1870s.
