Russian icon of the Mother of God "Life-Giving Spring" - 19th century, tempera on panel
We present a unique, original example of an Orthodox icon of the Mother of God "Life-Giving Spring" (Russian: Zhivonosny Istochnik), painted using the traditional technique of tempera on panel. This work was most likely created in Russia in the 19th century and has been preserved in excellent, unchanged condition – without repairs, repainting, or conservation interventions. Minor, natural cracks on the surface testify to the passage of time and add an authentic, collectible character to the icon.
Composition and symbolism
The central motif of the icon is the Mother of God with the Child Jesus (the Savior), shown inside a large chalice (goblet), which symbolizes the source of all graces and the Eucharist. The chalice is placed in a stone baptismal font – a reservoir from which water with healing properties flows. The composition directly refers to the miracle at the sanctuary of Balikli near Constantinople. In the lower part of the icon, figures are visible – dignitaries, the sick, and the faithful – drawing water from the spring, symbolizing spiritual and physical healing. Above the Mother of God hover two angels, and on the side panels (kleimy) are images of selected saints, who may have served as patron saints of the family that commissioned the icon.Condition and collectible value
The icon is a rare depiction in its original state – without traces of later repairs or repainting. Minor, natural cracks are typical for 19th-century panels and do not affect the artistic or spiritual value of the object. This is an excellent acquisition for collectors of church art, enthusiasts of Russian icons, and those seeking authentic items with deep religious symbolism. Ideal for a private collection, as a vintage interior design element, or as a unique gift for those interested in Orthodoxy and Eastern spirituality.Product Information
