Candlestick with putto and woman, Meissen 20th century.
Candlestick with putto and woman, Meissen 20th century. It is a porcelain candlestick, in the neo-rococo style, which is characterized by irregular shapes and its appropriate allegorical message.Meissen porcelain: This is the basic and most valuable material. It is characterized by pure whiteness, translucency (light can be seen through thin fragments) and high durability relative to its delicacy. It is so-called hard porcelain, invented in Meissen. The depiction of a woman with a putto (a symbol of earthly love) may refer to an allegory of love or a pastoral scene. The figures are depicted half-naked, which meets the criteria of the rococo style from which neo-rococo draws. Popular at that time in paintings, scenes of Fête Champêtre and Fête Galante, subtly showed the connection of man with nature, with the seasons and love deriving from the beautiful and tangible world. The base of the candlestick, of irregular shape, brings to mind a shell or a seashell, from which emerges a stem decorated with blue acanthus leaves. The candlestick has a transparent glaze, a shiny coating that covers the entire white biscuit (fired porcelain), giving it smoothness and depth of color. Overglaze painting: Delicate, hand-painted details on an already glazed surface (e.g., blushes on faces, colors of flowers) using ceramic paints, which are then fired in a kiln.
