Early copies of the magazine Żołnierz Polski from the 1950s, Poland

„Żołnierz Polski” in the 1950s was an important tool of propaganda and indoctrination in the service of the communist authorities of the Polish People's Republic. As the official organ of the Polish People's Army, the magazine played a key role in shaping the worldview of soldiers in accordance with the prevailing ideology. Its pages were dominated by military themes combined with pushy promotion of cooperation with the Red Army and criticism of the West. A characteristic feature of the magazine was the combination of technical advice for soldiers with political propaganda. Alongside dry information about training or new military equipment, there were biased articles glorifying the USSR and warning against the „imperialist threat” from NATO. The visual side of the magazine consisted of numerous photos from exercises, portraits of commanders, and satirical drawings ridiculing political opponents. Today, archival issues of „Żołnierz Polski” from this period are a valuable source for researchers of the PRL, revealing the mechanisms of military propaganda. At the same time, they are a sought-after collectible item, documenting the realities of military service in the times of Stalinism. Preserved copies can be found in libraries and archives, where they serve as material for analyzing the historical policy of the time and methods of shaping social consciousness.
