Antique wooden transmission pulley - 19th/20th century industrial
We present an exceptional technical antique – a wooden transmission pulley from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. It is not only a witness to the Industrial Revolution but also a spectacular element of interior design in industrial, loft, or rustic style.
Pulleys of this type were once the heart of every industrial plant and farm. They were used to transfer power from steam engines, water turbines, or traction engines to production machines – threshers, lathes, sawmills, or mills. Using leather or rubber transmission belts, energy was distributed throughout the entire factory, powering dozens of devices simultaneously.
The construction of this specimen is extremely solid and well thought out. It was made from multiple segments of hardwood (most likely oak or beech), carefully fitted and joined together. This segmented construction provided greater strength and resistance to deformation than a pulley made from a solid piece of wood. A characteristic feature is the two-part construction – the pulley consists of two halves, which allowed for installation on a shaft without the need to disassemble the entire drive system.
