Set of three Deesis icons - Christ, Mother of God, John the Baptist - Russia 19th/20th c.

We present an extraordinary set of three icons depicting the classic Byzantine scene Deesis (intercessory prayer). This work, full of mysticism and spiritual depth, typical of the Orthodox tradition, has for centuries formed the center of the home iconostasis.

The composition is strictly hierarchical: in the center is Christ Pantocrator (Almighty) seated on a throne, to His right (on the left of the viewer) is Mother of God with hands raised in a gesture of prayer (orant), and to the left (on the right of the viewer) stands John the Baptist, also in an intercessory pose. Such a depiction symbolizes the mediation of saints between God and people.

Icons of this type, most often painted in tempera on a wooden panel (or on a metal sheet), come mainly from Russia from the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries. They are characterized by deep coloring, gilding (often in the form of a gold background or halos), and a specific, hieratic style that reflects the canon of Orthodox church art. Depending on the state of preservation and the workshop of execution, these icons may have original polychrome, traces of patina, and sometimes even abrasions resulting from many years of presence in a home chapel.

This is a unique item not only for collectors of sacred art, but also for lovers of Russian antiques and historical religious objects. Each of the icons is a testament to faith and craftsmanship that has survived decades. Ideal for a private collection, as an element of a home altar, or as an original interior decoration inspired by the spirit of old Russia.
